Think I have worked put the issue. My regulator is a BGM item which works for both AC and DC. If used on a AC setup I think you need to fit an extra wire as a bridge between the AC in and out.

The lights issue is fixed       - in fact they are a bit on the dim side which is a little surprising.   Any ideas why that might be?

I also took it for its MOT yesterday    - it failed       - as I had one of the tyres pointing the wrong way. I wish that it had not come with directional tyres - not great when you have off set rims.

It also failed on the steering being too loose, so will need to tighten that up

One thing that came to light with having a proper ride on it is that its when its idealing after stopping at lights or similar I've not been able to get it to tick over evenly - its either dying too much or kind of revving on (not ticking over too quickly if you get my drift). Could this be down to the pilot jet being wrong?

Yeh. Passed my MOT retest today

The idealing issue has improved since my air filter fell off. Might look to get a remade luna one although a bit concerned about their rep of falling apart.

i havnt done anything to it for ages but on sunday i fitted a new coil,to the cometa engine put a drop of petrol in the carb and kicked it to see if it would attempt to fire.to my surprise not only did it attempt but ran until the petrol had been used up! a lot of smoke and it did try to cut out when i put the flip top choke lever down but i can sort these.      
i just had to put more petrol in and run it again didnt i.

Great news. Get some air in them tyres and baz it down the road

So I've always wanted a race seat for my Lui, so after missing out on one a while back I decided I would make my own. I sourced a seat from ebay for about £10 with the idea that I would cut it down to make something to fit my lui.



Think I need about 7 inches removed











My first concern is making the cuts straight enough so I think i will be using a junior hacksaw rather than the angle grinder (so don't hold your breath) as I have never been able to do that very neatly. I hope my metal work skills have improved since school!

Then I need to find someone to do the welding, get it blasted and powder coated and make a base to fix it to. Also bit concerned about whether I will be able to sew leather on a sewing machine (or whether the GF can anyway!)

Should be done in about 3 years I think!

That place on Poplar Rd near you was good (& cheap) for welding.
I guess you will (or get someone to fabricate the base using yours as a template?
Have you checked the curvature of the seat matches the petrol tank curve. Also it will some type of bung / support for rear end.
If it works it should look great plus you might even have some comfort, my original one is not comfy!

No I've not profiled it but it seems a good match - if you look at the picture of the two seats you'll see the Lui seat is not profiled. The seat base of a standard seat is flat also. The seat I'm cutting down has some buffers at the rear which will be retained and hopefully still work. I've no fully formed ideas regarding a locking mechanism to stop the sweat jumping but my current seat also dose not work in that respect

As for making the base - do you mean the foam? I'll just buy some more and cut to shape and glue down

Thanks for reminder about the welders. I might try there or the VW place near the nip and tickle that you told me about.

The base bit I meant was the plate base that bolts to the tank. Something that will hinge and maybe attach to base of your seat or just replace.
I'm also interested as I have an old knackered seat like that so interested to see how you get on. my seat has a side catch so hopefully can get it work like the vega seat does.
having used both welders - the one nearer you is much cheaper!

Ed Before you cut it, have you considered reducing the slope at the back? If you were to follow the angle of the top line of the seat where it rises it would allow the seat to move forward on the tank. You could use masking tape to give you a finished line to see how it might look. I would follow the sides for depth of the " lifted" back.
An alternative method of cutting it would be a jig- saw with a metal blade, if you have one even better if it has a speed adjuster you could slow it down to steady the blade .

The seat base I have has a hinge and I was thinking of having that welded directly to the base plate - so an all in one item when fitting. I will use my existing seat base plate as a template and cut out of the thinnest possible steel I think I can away with!

Not 100% sure I follow all your suggesting about the rear of the seat but I get the idea about not taking up so much room with it so maybe a less gradual gradient and /or less height might be worth the extra effort. I'll play around with the masking tape as suggested.

I’ve Got a jigsaw but you need a hacksaw attachment, if that helps?
I like welding seat base idea and if you make one using yours as a template, shame to wreck the seat you have.

I'm hardly a long distance tourer on my Lui anyway so should be ok but you never know when you might want to change back. Still got the handlebars too just in case.

Yeah I think you're right. They have just never picked up on it. It has got me thinking how I could make it catch. Looking at the seat I'm going to cut it looks like it has the hole for a seat catch but I'm not sure what mechanism would have been used to release it. I guess the lever with the spring in the picture but I dont see how.



I'm going to order some sheets of 3mm steel off ebay for my seat base

You'll just need to have some type of lug or seat bolts that look a bit like a for tree (eg off a vespa). I reckon that's the easy bit compared to the other work!

Ed, sorry for the slow response I've had internet problems.
I would follow the top line of the seat with the tape , so it looks like you've lifted the back section. There is a seat out there for the larger series scooters that has the lifted look which allows a rear rack to be fitted. If you use a jig saw , make sure it has a metal cutting blade ( they look just like a hacksaw blade) keep the speed slow to begin with until your into the metal or it will bounce and bend the blade.

As for the catch I don't think it will be that easy Mike. I was thinking I'd need something like this welded to my base



But then also need something to actually poke into the hole and also spring back

Or maybe something like a garden gate catch?

Ed - I'll take some photos of the catch and seat post set up on my Lui 50 CL which has a slopeback seat. The seat was made for me by Absolutely Scooters in Sheffield.
