My Lui 125 conversion
Bought this a couple of years back
Its a lot more shabby than it looks in the picture
To be honest I didn't realise the real differences between the Lui and a Vega and because it was so slow decided to up it from 50cc to 125cc before doing the frame.
engine out
strip
flywheel holding tools are not easily available
parts sourced
barrel mod. Cut the skirting off a cento barrel before rebore to 125 because its too thin
rebuild
holding tool made from J range rim which is slightly bigger and just fits
engine cowling modification to stop bottoming out of frame on engine
mudguard shortened to clear inlet manifold. Not sure I actually needed to do this but no harm done.
might fit this nice little pipe
Anyways this is as far as i've got so far. Once I have the engine back in I intend to get it running and maybe off the sorn and mot'ed for a short while before I start on the bodywork and stuff. Problem is I started on doing an electronic conversion shortly before moving to a house 'in need of some modernising' and having a second child, so its not be touched for some time.
I'll post some progress pictures if I ever get things moving again

Re: My Lui 125 conversion
Thanks Daz. Cant wait to at least attempt to get it running. With hindsight I wish I had not started on Electronic conversion.

why is that mate? are you going 6volt or 12 volt electronic?Snails wrote:Thanks Daz. Cant wait to at least attempt to get it running. With hindsight I wish I had not started on Electronic conversion.

Re: My Lui 125 conversion
I was going to get a 12 Volt Electronic kit done by Jem before he did a lord lucan a few months ago
Re: My Lui 125 conversion
Just cos it means I have to wait even longer. I know its probably better in the long run
So far I have all the parts needed apart from the luna stator plate to fix the electronic stator to. I'm still trying to work out whether I can use my old lui one rather than finding a vega one.
I have drilled out the boss from both the AF Flywheel and the Vega Flywheel. I did the AF one first and its not as good a job as the latter one and I think I may have to drill them out again because some are a little ovalised. Problem is the pillar drill is round my mates house and I just cant seem to find time to go round and finish the job off.

i hope Jem is OK, haven't heard from him either

seems like were all in the same boatvegagirl wrote:Staffy (Gareth) wrote:I was going to get a 12 Volt Electronic kit done by Jem before he did a lord lucan a few months ago

i sent him a message on lcgb site and its gone from my outbox, so i assume he got it.
on a note i know sausage of sausagespeed can do these conversions, might be worth trying him?

Re: My Lui 125 conversion
how you intending to mount the electrics?
here is mine, i will need to add a regulator, but can do that easily as i have a small one (regulator that is )

Re: My Lui 125 conversion
I have not really given it too much thought as yet. My general plan was to get some sort of bracket fabricated and fit it roughly where yours is. Mine being a Lui used to have the coil attachted to the flywheel cover if I remember right. I'm planning on using a ducati regulator and coil
what is that round black object?

Where are you going to fit the regulator?

Re: My Lui 125 conversion
probably under the coil, the regulator is only small, from a varitronic.Snails wrote:Where are you going to fit the regulator?

Re: My Lui 125 conversion
Wow. I actually found the spare time to go round my mates and finish drilling out the bosses on my flywheels. Made a bit of a pigs ear of the AF one I did first as some of the holes are quite ovalised. The Vega one I spent a lot more care making the centre punch for the first drill dead centre and the results are much better. Matching the AF flywheel to my vega boss and everything lines up ok so I'm just going to have a go at bolting it together. I did want to tap and die the threads but cant now. The alternative would be to drill out all the holes again with a larger drill bit but I think I would be up to 10mm for this so I think I will just see how it goes and hope it does not shake itself apart. Lots of locktight I think!
As far as the keyway goes I lined the boss up so that the keyway was pointing to the same position as the old AF boss was. Hopefully this is the correct way to do it?
Once its bolted together next job is to get it lathed.

Re: My Lui 125 conversion
I used to make PX based electronics for Lambrettas in the late 80's by drilling, tapping and nylocs, it does work, I did wonder whether the PK vespa stuff might fit in a vega
from memory (fading fast) the hard bit is getting all the coils off the stator plate and on without damaging them.

...did this conversion a while ago....well worth the effort, posted on lcgb site.
i think you may have got the boss in wrong position?
the pick up is at 11 o'clock so the triggers in flywheel need to be over it and the piston needs to be nearly at tdc...? so i seem to remember keyway was at about 4 o 'clock...hope this helps... try to view lcgb post...pic's on there i've deleted from my files....good luck

pick up/flywheel timing mark note keyway @ 11 o'clock
also original timing mark arrow is now @ 6 o'clock :?
Obviously this picture shows it at 11 O clock but what its in relation to? Your timimg mark? I have not made a mark before taking them apart. Could I just position it the same in relation to where the -> arrow (not your marker one the embossed one) is on the flywheel?
Sorry if this is me being a thicko! Never did quite get my head round setting timings and stuff!

j125 electronic
...forget about where all the bits used to go....
what i did was found the keyway position when the points started to open = 11 o'clock before tdc
put the boss on crank, then line the electronic flywheel up with pickup timing mark, bolt flywheel to boss...

Right got the mag back from the engineering place round the corner
next step is to butcher a pk and vega stator and try to make one new one

I just plan to drill out three holes on the back of the stator and hopefully all the coils etc will lift off as one

I hope so - not had chance to offer it up to the casing yet. Also I hope none of them bolts come loose as think it would make a hell of a mess of things. Thinking of using strong locktight once I know the key way is in the right place
