Got the welding done (at great expense but a very good job)

Next issue is where to drill the holes, and removing some of the weld so the pipe will fit.

Only problem is that the only thing I have as a guide is this Vega case, which has also had some alloy welding done on it!

I can only assume that this had been damaged and repaired at some point in the past. The welder who did this has not done as a good job on this one as on my Lui casing.

Anyway if anyone has an image of the related area it would be helpful as a guide?

I have started on the job anyway using a pipe to judge how much weld to remove

Once enough weld is removed i'm thinking that it would be best to put the engine back in before marking the drill holes just to make sure things are level.

Noticed the old tax disk on it the other day - Sept 97!

If I get it to run think I'm just going to get it back on the road for a year and enjoy it before I start the body work! That would probably take another couple of years knowing how fast I am and I cant bare to see it stuck in the garage any longer!

The choice of pipes is whether to use my Chisselspeed leg burner or the Scootopia repo job. As this is a 125cc I'm inclinded to go for the legburner and to keep the repo for my 75 bitza. Unfortunately this needs chroming or painting but I cant afford to chrome it and I dont trust heat proof paint to stay on so it may end up being the repo after all.

How does the throttle cable fit at the grip?





Just looked at this post from august 11 and it sounded like so little to do!

Since then I have finally managed to get the timing sorted out (thanks Daz) and the pipe on and so today was the momentous day. Took some videos to commemorate:

Unfortunately i noticed that fuel was leaking down the back of the scooter! Looks like the seam on the petrol tank has corroded during the last 5 years. I have a spare but was wondering if there is any reason why I should not get this one re welded? Anyone with experience of this?

Also you may of noticed a couple of difficulties I'm having. i.e. no throttle cable. I tried fitting a large frame gear outer but its too short, will a clutch outer fit?

Secondly how the heck do you get the centre beam off? Does the head stock need removing?

handle bars need to be lifted up slightly, just remove the steering bolt and wiggle it all upwards.
that petrol tap looks to be from a lui, possibly not as much fuel flow as a vega item.

well done snails .engine sounds sweet .i can not wait until i get mine running.i will be painting my leg burner in barbecue paint i have used it in the past and its not bad.a chrome exhaust on my vega would not look right anyway.if you have a spare tank in good nick use it.even if the colour is different .get out there and ride it Very Happy

Thanks Daz, that's a good point, mine is a Lui, I wonder how I can tell if there is a difference - other than carrying out scientific tests!

Probably going to leave the leg burner for my bitiza but that's a fair point, and your right it does sound good!

I would be interested in the difference between the two taps as mine is a Lui one but I have a NOS tap (presumably UK vega) that looks the same.

Embarassed actually having a better look i'm not sure what that tap is from snails.
the vega tap exits towards the rear light and has a much bigger bore and tail to the lui item which exits towards the front of the scooter.

something to look out for is the outer diameter on the new cassa fuel taps.
the outer is narrower than the original, but the inner diameter looks ok, the problem lies with when you fit your petrol pipe.
the original tap and carb banjo are the same size, the cassa one will require a small pice of pipe over the outlet to take up the difference in size.
hope that makes sence scratch

Well the good news is I've managed to stop my rear brake from sticking on the leggies (that I mentioned in another post) by applying some copper grease however the bad news was that whilst I was examining the fixings to see if I could free up some more space for the pedal to move in I noticed this

Obviously the strut is broken yet another blow on my very long running quest to get this scooter on the road and capable of more than 5 miles an hour.

For the time being I'm tempted to ignore it and carry on trying to get it through an MOT and worry about it later when I sort out the body work.

On the Lui light bulb front I managed to work out how to free the bulb - I'm glad I didn't try to force the bulb holder from the light as this is how it fixes in.

Again it looks like I have problems as it looks like the bulb is glued or tacked into the surrounding metal. I'm hoping that someone might tell me that this is a common way of producing bulbs and that you can buy them with the surround but the way my luck is with this project I'm not very hopeful.

I think you can still get that style of bulb Joey,nip into Halfords and have a look at their range .If not I probably still have my bulb as I converted to H4 halogen with a homemade holder and Vega dip/high switch. Idea We had a good weekend at Elvington and I walked away with the Group 4 trophy for doing 92 on the half mile and came second on the red SS90 from Lincoln sprint at 82 mph on the 1/4. Razz

I think you have me mixed up with Joey but well done anyway. That sounds scary fast.

I was thinking about whether a halogen conversion would be possible. Dont suppose you care to share how you made the holder? Did you have to change any other wiring other then swapping a lui switch for a Vega?

Oops,sorry mate.The bulb holder is a home made nylon top hat affair that is a tight fit into the lens block.The 'stop' plate is cut off the H4 bulb as in the Lamby conversion and the top hat is bored to the bulbs body size then a self tapper is used to trap the bulb after being set to get the focus right.The H4 uses a plug connector and it is just a case of joining the switch dip/high wires to the wires coming from it plus an earth.Sorry no pics to show you.

I've changed my mind and decided to get the broken frame strut sorted. To that effect I've had to take the leggies off. Thought I had to remove the handlebars to lift the headstock Rolling Eyes rather than just undo the allen bolt on the side. Embarassed All four allen bolts were pretty well seized up and one snapped as i was freeing it up Sad. As I have done so much stripping of the frame I've decided to change my plan and strip it completely and get it powder coated (its all I can afford)...so that looks like its going to be another couple of years before it gets back on the road Shocked Shocked Rolling Eyes

No updates since october - so here goes...........its finished!




No its not Sad

Since my last update I've stripped it down, had the strut repaired and the fork upper damper brackets welded. Then winter, Christmas and having to do a few jobs to do on my GP got in the way. Now all that'd done with I finally got the forks stripped today.Next job is to get the front hub stripped and then sort all the bits out, decide on a colour scheme and take it to the powder coaters - cant afford a proper paint job so that will have to do for now.

I have two questions

1. I've dismantled most of the front hub and now need to knock the bearings out. Stickys book for series 3's says that the inner bearing can be knocked out using a socket set extension bar. Is this the same for Luna's? I dont see anything for the bar to leverage against to do this.

2. This is a picture of my forks. How do I remove what ever it is keeping the plastic molding in place?

Now back from painters - I was going to leave in powder coat - but for the extra money I thought it worthwhile as i got it done pretty cheap.

I had a bit of a shock when I saw it in the flesh for the first time, and the Mrs hates it and said it looks like snot but I am happy about it again now.
