Vega project Empty Vega project

Post mickey c Sat Feb 21, 2015 1:32 pm

Its taken longer than hoped or expected but finally stripped and rust treated my 1st Luna project. It started at this:
Vega project Photo1_zps13bb0120

The photo doesn't do justice to the rust, most nuts needed drilling out and getting the engine bolt out of the silent blocks took about a month and countless new drill bits. I got nowhere and so had to find a firm with a magnetic drill (whatever this is?) And they got it out.

Finally got it blasted and think I will keep the powder coat finish as quite pleased with it. This leaves more money for the engine which having the silent blocks removed whilst I source new bearings.[url=https://s1274.photobucket.com/user/mickecowell45/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpsa156c85f.jpg.htl

Looking forward to getting it all together. Got a few ideas but general plan is something I use regularly and not get overtaken by byclcists !

I hope so! It's a nice one too, only 2 numbers. I thought I need MOT 1st before I do battle with DVLA? I do have a dating certificate from lcgb and original reg plate but no documents. I'm hoping this won't be problematic, should I be worried?

thanks for the positive comments guys.

not quite the shade of blue it should be or I was after but £100 for sand blasting and coating (plus I got a few spares and big lammie bits done too) so more than happy.

I'm just waiting for a big bag of nuts and bolts etc. to start getting the frame together whilst hopefully getting the bearings in the engine and getting this to Martin at Chiselspeed to do his reputed magic!

I've shelved my idea of a series 2 SIP digital speedo as I bought a cheap series 2 one to modify a spare headset with this but its flipping massive and would look ridiculous, taking up over half the headset top. I do have the original speedo and it seams to work but still fancy something with more accuracy (I'm on 9 driving points!) so will see if a series 3 speedo is possible or vespa or there are loads of GPS ones available but want to avoid a battery if possible.

Vega project Empty Original Registration

Post Admin Tue Feb 24, 2015 2:44 am

No documents will cause you a massive issue. You need to find where the scooter was originally registered and see if they have the original register entry for the scooter. If they do and that's always a big IF, then you need a copy of that which you use as your evidence to link the number to the scooter.

Once you have that your authentication letter needs to say that you bare looking to retain the original registration - bear in mind that the authentication letter needs to conform to the current DVLA requirements so if it was issued pre-2014 you will need a new one.

You will also need 2 photos of the scooter complete to show that it exists, also, a form V765 which needs to be stamped by an authorising club/organisation so LCGB, British Lambretta Archive, VMSC etc and a completed V55/5

Those then all need to be sent to the DVLA who should re-issue the number with no issues (fingers crossed). Very Happy

If you need any further info then drop me a PM on here.

good lord I wasn't expecting it to be that complex - I registered an imported Eibar last year and this wasn't anywhere near as difficult. I will have to update the LCGB authentification cert and I realise this probably needs a different thread but any pointers as to how I find out where the scooter was 1st registered please?

Don't the letters in the reg give a clue to where the location was???

I'm in the process of buying a project without documents. All I'll have is the plate. I found out that it was registered in Somerset, googled Somerset Archives, and a couple of days later I had a copy of the archive telling me when and where it was first registered.

At the same time, I phoned DVLA, gave them the number and they told me on the phone that they had a skeleton record for the registration number. Basically, this means that they know that this registration number was issued but they don't know when and to what vehicle. It's likely, I think, that this registration pre-dates DVLA computerisation in '83.

DVLA also told me that I should send a V55/5 with a letter of explanation for all this and there should not be an issue with keeping the original plate.

I can't, of course, confirm that this will work yet Suspect

That sounds promising, I've got little tinkering time at the moment but I can do some detective work on this.

An update is my research says the scooter was registered in Norwich. I've checked Norfolk archive and it looks like they charge £50 for looking for it - ouch!

I'm on a bit of go slow currently - waiting for forks to have welding done, bearings to arrive to start engine, chrome & zinc playing to be finished etc.
I have bought a sunny stator which us weird! Basically 6v except headlight which is 12v. I'm hoping there will be enough juice to run both lights on the 12v circuit so bought cheap LED unit. Quite pleased with the brightness but also think I can get a bigger / more LEDs in, if I can find 1.

Ah! But you've hooked it up to a battery- DC. If you run straight off the stator it'll be AC which may not be as bright. I've a LED rear light on my AC powered series 3 and it works but not that bright.

Not sure if you're on Facebook, but if you are and you're on the Vega page. I posted up a photo of my LED conversion I've done a few days ago. Running on the original 6V Stator and Flywheel, not only has my rear light and brake light improved 100% but my headlight has as well. Judging by mine, I'd say you'd have no problem.

I don't face book but I'll ask my lad to show it to me. Adam, can I ask what LED unit you used please? I just got a cheap thing off Ebay which is doing a job but is very small, I reckon I could double the number of LED's in the Luna back light, it is surprisingly large.

I used the original Lui back light housing, then made a separate bracket to fit inside the housing which I mounted the LEDs to.

Well progress has been slow, partly due to limited time but also waiting for stuff to come back from being plated but it's all here now. In the meantime I faffed about bodging a series 3 horn in and found some day time running LEDs I had lying around so stuck them here. Be safe be seen! Although I fancy / hope at 6'2" on a (I'm guessing a noisy) turquoise I should be quite visible , hopefully this will help more! They are pretty bright! Vega project Image_zpsazzoxtpq

Now to get some forks built. & in !

Vega project Empty slow progress

Post mickey c Wed Jan 06, 2016 5:12 am

Not unexpectedly; life, kids, other projects caused things to slow down. I am a friend of Snails and thankfully have few years yet to beat his restoration record!

My engine has been with Martin at Chiselspeed to his magic and unfortunately (obviously mainly for him) he had an accident and so it took him some time finish this. Got this back just before New Year. Starstream 140 reed valve conversion. Should be lively! I just need pay day to get some new chain guides as mine look very worn.
https://i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y423/mickecowell45/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zpslml3tfny.jpeg[/img]

As its been over 12 months since I stripped my engine (and with no manual to consult) can someone tell me please what should go in these tapped holes in between the chain guides and front sprocket? Definitely look factory but have no idea what or why something should be attached here.

Vega project Image_zpsvsvmcicq

Whilst waiting for the engine I have (hopefully) sorted the electrics and cables. I re-did the rear light LED conversion / bodge. Really cheap and it seams really bright.

Vega project Image_zpsvfegvpjd

I've also spent ages doing the forks. I nicked the idea from someone on here of using Series 3 springs cut shorter to fit. I also picked up some kwak dampers cheap - I'm trying anything to hopefully reduce the fabled vibrations! The only problem is that the attaching lugs on kwak dampers means that they do not sit parallel to the forks. I do have some slim escorts (which would fit parallel) but hope the kwak ones would work better unless anyone can advise me otherwise?

Vega project Image_zpsm0ljofezfaVega project Image_zpspkqnnwl1
sorry bit blurred but this where I'm at.

Finally I faffed about with the front hub and speedo drive for ages but then asked my partner for this for Christmas. Fits like a glove and should be much easier to fit, although this could be famous last words. My plan is to fit Sunny stator which is a bit weird - 6 volt points but with 12 v lighting loom. Hopefully the LED's will mean there is enough to power this speedo

Hi Mickey, coming along nicely sir. Speedo looks trick. The 2 holes in the casing are for the Cometa pump to bolt onto, so it may well be you have a Cometa casing. If i remember correctly there will be a hole above on the top of the casing (might be blanked off with a bolt)?......Steve

Thanks for both the positive comments and advice Steve.
the advice of do nothing with those holes suits me. I am definitely not doing lubematic thingy and initially thought that I'd pop a couple of bolts in the holes but then thought why bother? just something that could come loose and cause lots of problems!
I'm away this weekend but hope to make some more progress next week. Egg run near me around Easter is my goal to be on the road!
