1968 Lui 50 with 125 Starstream Engine & Strange Pipe

Just thought you might be interested in this, i have added to my Luna Line collection with a little Lui 50 with a twist as have got a 125 Starstream engine for it . The engine needs a complete strip, clean and rebuild before it goes back in but its not seized as i cranked it by hand as best i could due to the daft expansion pipe it came fitted with.

The carb and filter for the J range is in place and jetted with all parts seeming to be free when i took it apart including original flip choke. The exhaust pipe itself fits but doesn't allow the kickstart to be in place to work. I didn't have the correct J range kickstart so have connected a spare Vega kickstart i have and cranked it a little from there just to make sure its not seized.

It has the starstream flywheel etc and by the looks of it the rear hub too but someone may be able to confirm this from the images as the correct type as i don't recognise it. The shocker fits well and sits good under load.

The loom is in place etc but no coil or regulator connected (in fact i can't see where it would fit if im honest with this one as something looks wrong but can't compare it to me Vega as its not at mine at the moment).

The original headlight and rim are with it so thats also good and seat base is there, there is a replacement seat cover and foam but no fixings for it and the bar and spring to secure the seat is missing so if anyone has a Lui seat that has this piece intact then let me know as i will take it and fit it to the base i have.

I need a 4 speed gear change as obviously the one on it is the 3 speed for the Lui, plus need a standard Starstream exhaust or a pipe thats suitable so whats you got

yep, j range rear hub, if your keeping it you will need to run j range rims at the fron and back as vega rims are off set.
exhaust looks like a modified early fresco.

You don't need a 4 speed gear change. It's only cosmetic. How often do you look at your gears?

Your both correct, Daz the pipe is a messed with 80's Fresco and no i don't need the gearchange. I could do with the throttle/switch/lever housing though and the spring and arm for the seat im missing

if you compare the inside of the 3 speed shiter to that of a 4 speed shifter you will see that they are different.

This was on eBay recently wasn't it?
Lui's don't have the bracket for the coil on the frame as the coil is mounted to the head cowling and the junction box is part of the flywheel cover.

Bugger! Really? Why the hell are they different, other than showing 3 instead of 4 gears. All it has to do is slide around the handlebar.

where the gear cables go on the insideof the shifter on a 3 speed is a smaller diameter than on the 4 speed.
i only learned by putting a vega motor in a lui frame and as you, thought they would be the same, only to realise once riding it would only select 3 gears, the tie bar on engine casing prevents any further movement.

now what i did ot try was a lui tie bar on the vega casing, as at the time i thought they were also probably the same size

so its a possability it could work, i do have a lui tie bar if you need one to try staffy.

a 3 speed shifter does work with a 4 speed engine. It´s a little bit more work to get it dialled in, but it works (been using this setup for the last 2 years). Of course if you use a 3speed tiebar on a 4speed engine your in trouble. the 4 speed is a little bit shorter so that you can select all gears.

I may have a 4 speed gear changer and I do have a NOS Starsteam silencer. I'm having a thin out of spares at the mo so I'm worth contacting. I'm certainly not giving up as I've got another Cometa to build up but I do have spares a plenty.

snails could you put up a link to where this was covered before as this is what i will have to do having a 3 speed changer on my lui but using a 4 speed cometa engine and i could use something to refer to.thanks,mick.
