Thanks also Thackers! High praise indeed from you guys!
The photos seam to come out huge and don't show the dampers properly so I've tried again. All I know is they are off a Kawasaki and pretty commonly used on bigger lammies; as I say I got them cheap and rattle canned them the same colour. Just hope not being parallel won't affect their performance.

The speedo is fairly new product from SIP for small frame Vespas. I have one of their lambretta speedos on another scoot and love it. Magnet picks up the speed, rev counter, trip etc. It looks a squeeze into the headset but the vega headset appears bigger than I remember small frame Vespa headset (although I was 16 and alas very long time ago). I'll let you know more when I put it in.

Looking good Mike. I'd be interested to see the other bits that came with the speedo Can you post some photos and describe where you plan to connect them. Good luck with getting everything into the headset, that would be a worry for me, so hopefully not too hard.

To make your pictures smaller open them in something like windows picture viewer and resize them before you upload to photo bucket.

You cant change resolution size on an I phone camera, but can work around the issue using apps

All very technical Ed, perhaps too much for this Luddite! I'll try a logical approach and used a photo from a different angle.

Just trying to finish putting the engine together but spending more time trying to find bits I've stored somewhere 'safe.'

Well progress has again been slower than I'd hoped. Usual stuff of life, work, kids etc getting in the way. Also had some snapped & seized engine studs which took ages to sort & a less enjoyable job. I've had the engine in & out at least
4 times!

Hopefully not too far away from trying to start the engine:
Vega project - Page 2 Image_zpsuedgaom4

I still can't get photos to fit either!
I picked up this exhsust years ago, looks like the end was removed and replaced, looks interesting but no idea how it will perform on my 140 engine, hopefully save
me buying something. Plus it keeps the bike looking a little more original.
Vega project - Page 2 Image_zpsielinyrq

It did take some cleaning up and can't afford to get it re chromed. Plus the cost of that could buy specialist pipe which I still might need, hopefully not!

Vega project - Page 2 Image_zps4nounkmk

Next job is electrics - not my strong suit and I need to find a suitable coil, any pointers please?

Seat looks good but I think you need to take that rear rack off! Wink

I think I have a spare coil from my Lui that I can give to Mike, will it work? Was there a difference between the Vega and Lui coils?

thanks Ed
that would be great - I cant see there being a difference and even if there is, it should work ok. Worth a try at least.
although going backwards again as the engine needs to come out again - cant get the exhaust anywhere near the holes next to the flywheel! feel like making deflated Dick Dastardly noises!

Why does the engine need to come out to fit the pipe?

Post some pics with the issue.

Cant believe you've actually said that you 'cant see why there would be a difference', because its a lambretta!

The engine needs to come out to fit a packer gasket under the exhaust manifold. Getting manifold on with seized & wrong peg was a long job! Just hope the exhsust will not blow & be closer to the mounting holes with the packer.

Again slow but enjoyable progress.  I started and hopefully finished the electrics.  Took some working out, especially with the SIP speedo and this weird 12 v and 6v stator from a Sunny I am using.  It'll either work a dream or I might have done something quite drastic and blown the stator.  Vega project - Page 2 Image_zps2zoo7yci
bit like black spaghetti and I've still got more wiring to get in there.
I popped the speedo power box here, which is a squeeze but fits neatly, I couldn't even fit some rubber or similar to lower vibrations onto the power box.
Working out the speedo pick up hurt my head for a while

I also had some jobs to do to finish the engine and sorted those out.
it took me a while to get around to buying a coil as didn't want additional shipping from Italy but had to bite the bullet.
Vega project - Page 2 Image_zpsnrkjky3q
I've also faffed about and made the suggested exhaust bracket - there was no way I could get the holes to line up without drilling the engine casing. it will make my exhaust point upwards and look a bit odd but this might save my number plate which did look it would melt in minutes.
Gave it kick the other day and have a very good spark, which is positive. Hopefully finish mounting the exhaust and get some petrol - I'm excited to give it a try but tempering this as I am sure further challenges lie ahead.

Well I finally got around to getting some petrol having sorted a few other things, mainly (still) fitting the exhaust. Gave it a few kicks, then few more ... Nothing, nowt, nada! Sparks well and was hoping it would at least fire & run rough with some fine tuning to carb, timing etc. I'll try again later in the week & will try some easy start. Wish I had strobe so considering bump start as its only light but not keen on looking more of a fool in front of my neighbours & also wondering if this might put undue strain on a newly engine.

Mike I have a strobe you can borrow. Or you can do the light bulb test as per Stickys book as you are still on points yeah? I have the correct battery for this test in my 'other' garage

Mint! Cheers Ed, I'd love a borrow of that and maybe your expertise with the light bulb test? Not familiar with it but not had points since you had hair! I'll do some research & call in a favour when you next have a spare hour please?

Long time, little to report for a while.
In between other projects I could not get the spark anywhere near a 15 to 20 degrees before TDC, more like 90 to 100 degrees. Meanwhile whilst playing around the Indian stator started to fall apart (2 mounting lugs snapped off & neither up really tight).
In the end, I went for new sunny flywheel & stator. The spark is now where I want it & therefore I guess vega flywheel & stator wouldn't work without a lot of alterations. Fitted these & kicked it over, much to my surprise it ran & sounded pretty sweet.
I managed to sort the headlight & brake light but still no horn & back light stopped working, I wonder if AC current fried it?
However since these strides forward, a big backwards step as scooter no longer starts. I think this is due to the carb as petrol gushes out. Hopefully sort this & finish electrics and cabling.
I hope to report more soon and some photos, ideally a video of it running but cue another several month gap.

Vega project - Page 2 Empty Nearly there (hopefully)

Post  mickey c Thu Jan 05, 2017 1:59 pm

A late Happy New Year to you all!
I managed to get some time off work over Christmas and so when the kids went to bed, I played in my cellar.
Prior to that I found the fuel issue was merely me being useless and not attaching the fuel pipe correctly.
Therefore the scooter now starts well but a bit smokey and got told off (lots) for effectively running it in the house. I will play around with the mix and jets when she is released from the cellar several years after being put there (scooter not wife).
Help from snails corrected another school boy error so electrics virtually sorted except I have no revs reading on SIP speedo - hopefully a resistor plug will fix this.

Last night I finished cabling and was left with this birds nest

Vega project - Page 2 Image_zpsjeilyxhx
Tidied this up to this
Vega project - Page 2 Image_zpspkqn8jmp

It is now close to MOT which should be interesting. I will save what sounds like the  really fun job of fitting the centre beam until I hear what the MOT guy says. With all the extra wiring I reckon the beam will be even trickier.
Vega project - Page 2 Image_zpspkqn8jmp

I'm going to fit the floor mats and check all nuts etc are tight tonight and looking forward to the first run up the road, shame its -5 so will wait for slightly warmer temperature.
I'm pleased so far

Hi Mickey, getting there Wink .  I have to ask tho - have you checked the front suspension travel straight & side to side as the front does dip a lot & wouldn't want to think that the kwaka damper travel when on full brake mode dug into your leggies? I'm sure you'll have checked but gotta ask for my own piece of mind  Shocked !....Steve

Ohh - that is a good call. With me never assume I've thought of these things, I hadn't and will check this weekend.
If anyone notices any other potential issues or there are other common obstacles that could arise, please say so!
Thanks for the heads up Trotsky!

No worries. Obviously you can dial in "stiffness" on adjustment to limit travel, but you won't want them too stiff or your suspension will just "bounce" instead of absorb the road & will give you very little feel on the front end.

On S3 the weight of the front end helps slightly, but Lunas' have no front end weight & you may find the front end "skips" on bumpy surfaces if too stiff.

The problem with Kwaka dampers is that they are steering dampers as opposed to fork dampers, so dampen both ways. You tend to need them reasonably soft cos they don't rebound as quickly as fork dampers, great back then before adjustable fork dampers (i used washing machine drum dampers on me race scooter!) Embarassed   A bit of a compromise really Crying or Very sad .

Hopefully all will be well anyway  Very Happy ...Steve

Washing machine dampers? That is freestyle improvising- Very impressive.
I'm a bit worried on 2 counts, firstly you are correct, the gap between the top of the dampers and the leggies is only 2 inches. It looks ok when going straight but round a bend or turning off a kerb the gap is much smaller!
I did intend to set the kwak dampers on softest setting as there are lots of potholes & speedbumps where I live.
This is partly because i thought that I was being clever putting in series 3 springs as I'm a bit bigger / heavier than the average 16/17 the Luna was designed for.
Therefore I'm both worried my front end will skip about or my dampers will smack my leggies!
I will go easy when I ride it or I might just put the slim dampers on that I've got knocking around. Decisions decisions ...

Hi Mickey, one of my club mates worked on the electric board & discovered the dampers, stiffer than lammie ones - but more importantly back then they were free!!
If it's 2" after full suspension travel i would think that is ok, but if it's before i would be tempted to put the slimline ones on as there is a lot of suspension travel & no matter how gentle you are, eventually they'll bash your leggies, or worse you'll not be able to turn your steering which could be a lot more dangerous  Sad .
Personally i would measure the length of the rod at the bottom of the damper - add that to the top (maximum travel), & if that total length hits your leggies i would err on the side of caution/safety, if that makes sense?
If your suspenion is too soft/bouncy with the slim ones on then you might have to bite the bullet on some stiffer/adjustable dampers, but at least you won't have damaged yourself or the leggies.....Steve

Thanks again Steve
I owe you (at least) one. There was 3 inches at bottom of the damper & 2 inch gap at the top - dents to the legshield was probably the best case scenario!
Changed for the slim escorts I happened to have. Would love some adjustable BGM's or similar but they are expensive. This was originally a budget restoration but costs always rise, I'll start saving.
In the meantime

Vega project - Page 2 Image_zps7ahh3n2a

Don't look as good as the Kwak's but at least they should be safer!
Thanks again for the much needed advice!
Mike
