Is this piston decent, or is the shape wrong??

Post  Raffspeed on Thu May 31, 2018 2:31 am

I picked up a tzr150 piston off aliexpress a while ago to use on a 140 conversion. However having looked at it again, as well as some others also available, has me wondering whether the dome shape is ok?? To my eyes it looks rather flat, wheras the alternative seems to have what I'd consider a more normal domed shape?? Also, my one has some sort of black coating, however once again I'm wondering if it is actually some sort of proper coating or just a cheap lick of paint? (god forbid...)

Here's the one I have...

And here is the alternative, with the domed crown...

The second one looks exactly the same as i have in mine. It's slightly domed as opposes to the flat black one which looks wrong for our type of cyl head. Good find Cool Cool Cool

It seems the first one is for the TZM 150 (despite being advertised as the tzr unit??) I went and bought one of the 2nd ones (I'd already bought the first ages ago) I had to get the first oversize otherwise the price goes up to round 67usd compared to the 27 for this one... Aliexpress it pretty great actually, I've even found the same rods that west coat lambretta use for their humiliator kits (well a good quality copy at least) for around 35 bucks... Gotta love the chinese eh?? Actually you can also get a version of the quattrini M1 kit off there for not much at all, I've even been considering having a crack at using one of em on my spare Vega...

Also, how exactly should I go about getting the window welded up on my piston?? Do I just fill it up with a tig and then have it turned level on a lather (that's all I can think atm??)

Cant help you on the welding part, sorry. I guess it would have to be alloy to keep the heat universal, is tig alloy? If your going the 140 route you will need a reed valve i think , so no need to seal up the holes

Hope you're right

I was hoping there'd be no need to weld up the holes with a reed setup, but I've read elsewhere that one side needs to be done if you go down the reed route??

That is a good price. No idea what Ali express is but seems to sell all sorts. Where is the M1 kit? Not that id ever think of fitting one to a Vega. That would be a bit mad!
